Do I need a building permit for a garden shed in Bavaria?

Not always. Under Article 57 of the Bavarian Building Code (BayBO), small structures can be permit-free (“verfahrensfrei”) — including a building with up to 75 m³ of enclosed space, with no habitable rooms, toilet or fireplace, located in a developed area (not in the “Außenbereich”). It must still comply with substantive building law, in particular the boundary-distance rules in Article 6 BayBO.

Who we are

Built for German law

Ask in plain language and get a precise answer in seconds, always with a reference to the original source so you can verify it. Think of it as ChatGPT, but grounded only in official German law — never random web content.
